Computers, monitors and mice oh my...

Hello again.

Since the last post, I have been able to take a little siesta from work to spend time with the family, work on some projects, and to help develop a few new 'Treading Lightly' episodes. Also since the last post, there have been several new episodes on the air!

This week's episode deals with office equipment and power usage.

It is estimated that one office workstation (computer, monitor and peripherals) can use enough power over the course of a year to contribute one tonne of green house gas emissions from a power plant.

Some tips for a 'greener' workstation are to use EnergyStar rated equipment and to use sleep mode when not at your desk - but remember that computers and monitors on standby or sleep mode can still use around 10% of the power during regular use - so it is important to shut off these appliances when not in use.

Battery operated keyboards and mouses (mice?) are commonplace these days and it is important to have a sound battery recycling and/or recharging program in effect. Battery disposal in landfills is still a big environmental pollutant hazard. It is also important to remember not to leave mice on their charging docks when not necessary, as many of them will trickle charge needlessly, wasting power.

Feel free to send me your comments and ideas.

"Treading Lightly: Minimizing Your Environmental Footprint" can be heard Wednesday to Saturdays on the CKUA Radio Network. The episodes are also archived at www.ckua.com, just follow the link on the bottom to "Treading Lightly".

Until next time - keep your feet on the ground, and your filters clean...

Matthew
